Our Story
SBRR Mahajana First Grade College is at an epochal moment in its cherished history, since it was founded in 1982, born as an offspring of Mahajana Education Society (1937). It started as a Women’s College offering B.A and B.Com programmes and was admitted to the Grant-in-aid scheme in the year 1987, and in 1988 became a co-educational institution. As the college made rapid strides, being committed to academic excellence and qualitative development, B.Sc. programme was introduced in the year 1988, BBM programme was started in 1994, followed by Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry combinations in B.Sc. in 2004. The BCA programme was introduced in 2008.
From a modest beginning the college has today branched out into a well reputed institution with its multi-dimensional growth. As a logical perseverance of its primary desire, on the threshold of the 21st Century, the college started PG programmes in 1999 from a new campus situated five kms. away from the main Campus. The institution now offers post-graduate degree and diploma courses in thirteen disciplines, which include Computer Application, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, Commerce, Social Work, Chemistry, Economics and Tourism Administration. It is poised to start more number of new programmes in the years to come. It is granted Community College under the UGC Scheme, offering Diploma in Hospitality & Catering and Diploma in Museology. This programme is meant for the general public as well as for the interested students of the college.
The institution has excelled both in terms of infrastructure development and in the quality of education that is imparted. It is affiliated to the University of Mysore and has been accredited thrice by the NAAC with Four Star (2001), B++ (2007) and ‘A’ Grade (2015) in First, Second and Third Cycles respectively. The college has been recognized by the UGC as College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) during 2010 and 2016. The institution is one of the few prestigious colleges which was also designated as the Lead College by the Government of Karnataka to carry out HRD/TQM related activities in the region.
During the past three and half decades, a stream of adept staff members have made a lasting impression upon the college. So far, more than 8496 students have passed out of the hallowed portals of the college. They are mainly responsible for the overall growth and the present position enjoyed by the institution. Achievements from the fields of Sports, NCC, NSS, Talents Forum, Placement Cell and many other fora are outstanding and noteworthy.
All the departments of the college have been consistently doing well and have kept up high standards of performance. Faculty members comprising 38 Ph.D, 32 M.Phil, 31 NET, 26 SLET and others with abundant experience and enthusiasm have made great impact in carving a niche for the college.
Presently there are 2646 students and 149 teaching 130 non teaching staff members who are the carriers of the spirit of the institution. Their dedication, hard work and professional commitment has been instrumental in the outstanding achievements recorded by the college. We have called our unique endeavour a workshop for leadership development. Some of the staff members have registered creditworthy academic growth and leadership abilities. Each faculty member is vested with an independent area, more than 100 of them in total, giving them an excellent opportunity to excel in the chosen field. This also provides an opportunity for the students to hone their leadership skills as well.
The vision of the chief patron of the college, Sri Rattehalli Ramappa, ‘Promotion of Gender through Education’, still guides the college, even after becoming a co-educational institution. The legacy of Eighty years (1937-2017), left behind by its founders, steers the onward march of the Mahajana Education Society presently spearheaded by Sri R Vasudeva Murthy, a noted social leader of the city of Mysuru.
The college observed Silver Jubilee year through 2007-2008. The commemorative programme was held on June 27, 2008 in the august presence of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the Hon’ble Former President of India. Planting of ‘Peace Tree’, release of publications and dedication of an open auditorium, named after the visiting guest Dr. Kalam, marked the occasion.
The Social Business Academic Network – India Chapter, was launched from the college on 4th September, 2015. It was inaugurated by Prof. Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Laureate, Founder of Grameen Bank and Chairman, Yunus Centre, Bangladesh. On this occasion planting of a ‘SB Tree’, release of a book ‘Mahajana – In the Eyes of the Press 2015’ was under taken.
The college, today, in addition to being the most sought after destination for quality education, has emerged as a socio-cultural hub of the region, The College provides platform for a number of programmes which are diverse in nature and drawing the attention of large sections of the society. It looks forward to play a proactive role in nation building, besides discharging the duty of imparting education to general public.
Thirty four years traversed by the institution stands testimony for its commitment to lofty ideals with which it was brought into existence, i.e. value-based quality education at affordable cost. The college with its nationalistic stand, pro-people approach, upholding humane values and student-centered administration, has been emerging as a centre of excellence in the field of higher education.
As a part of the Institutional Social Responsibility, the institution is proud of its green initiatives such as solar energy usage, waste water recycling and compost making from the kitchen waste, rain water harvesting and creation of a waterbody. Adoption of animals at Chamarajendra Zoological Garden, Mysuru and looking after 448 trees stand testimony for the commitment. Participation in the Swacch Mysuru Dasara – Post Dasara cleanup has been yet another such initiative.
In continuation of the Institutional Social Responsibility, a village has been adopted for its integrated development. An MoU has been signed with the village, Varakodu, wherein diverse types of activities are carried out. Notable among these are renovation of an ancient temple maintenance of a Kalyani (Water tank), introduction of Student Self Help Groups, Greening of village, conducting of socio-economic survey to create a databank for developmental activities, organization of special camps as part of Extension and Outreach programme of the college. All these activities have active participation of the students, faculty and the local population. The institution has, in all seriousness and commitment, extended Dr. A.P.J Kalam’s PURA (Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas) to this village. In addition, special awareness programmes on Evils of Alcohol and Women Empowerment have also been conducted.
The college NCC Unit 4B Coy of 13 Kar BN NCC was adjudged as the ‘Best Unit’ for Karnataka and Goa Directorate in 2014. The NSS Unit was also adjudged the Best for the University of Mysore, in the same year.
The college has also been recognized as ‘Research Centre’ for Life Sciences by the University of Mysore, thus enabling the PG students to pursue research and to enroll for Ph.D. programmes.
There is unique blend of national and international students with due emphasis in gender. i.e. girl students. There are about 51 international students from 20 countries and the overall female representatives account for more than 331/3.
The first Principal of the college was Sri G.S. Mylari Rao, a retired professor of English, who served from 1982 to 1988. Afterwards, four Principals have completed their term as successful administrative heads. They are Prof. K.S. Boregowda (1988 – 1989), Dr. V.N. Nayak (1989 –1999) and Prof. P. Sarojamma, (1999 – 2006) and Prof. K.V. Prabhakara (2006-2017).
The college operates from twin sites, the premier location in Jayalakshmipuram housing the UG courses measuring 6 acres, and the satellite campus housing PG courses, measuring 22 acres on the main roads leading to the world famous Brindavan Gardens and the Archaeological wonder, Srirangapattanam.
The college has Eleven MoUs with several leading organizations and institutions to evolve as a sought after “Quality Centre of Learning”.
